Lung Cancer

It is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. This growth may lead to Metastasis, which is an invasion of adjacent tissue and infiltration beyond the lungs. The vast majority of primary Lung Cancers are carcinomas of the lung, derived from epithelial cells. Lung cancer, the most common cause of cancer- related death in men and the second most common in women, is responsible for 1.3 million deaths world wide annually. The most common symptoms are shortness of breath, coughing (including coughing up blood), and weight loss. The main types of Lung Cancer are small cell lung carcinoma and non-small cell lung carcinoma.

Early symptoms of Lung Cancer.

Usually the symptoms of Lung Cancer are very common and may not be noticed by anyone. It is only when the symptoms either aggravate, or when the victim is totally helpless, one realises the need to visit the doctor. There might be many reasons behind the occurrence of the Lung Cancer like smoking, air pollution which can lead to different types of Lung Cancer like non-small cell Lung Cancer, small cell Lung Cancer, metastatic cancer and other types of Lung Cancer.

Some of the common symptoms are :-

• Persistent cough.
• Hoarse voice.
• Spit or phlegm stained with blood.
• Pain in the abdomen.
• Clubbing of fingernails.
• Chest pain sometimes associated with difficulty in breathing.
• Difficulty in swallowing.
• Persistent low-grade fever with paleness of the skin.
• Skin turning grey and dry.
• Weight loss.
• Low energy levels.
• Shortness of breath
• Loss of appetite.
• Spinal cord compression.

However not all of the doctors will necessarily use all of these tests, some may use less and some more. Specific patients may require different tests and therefore the final selection of any tests must be made in conjunction with a medical doctor.
