OVERVIEW EXPLANATION

β 1 refers to a multi-functional group of Cytokines (signalling proteins) produced by a range of tissues and cells, including the bones, spleens, platelets and Immune Cells. Significant roles for these proteins include: intracellular communication, cell growth and differentiation (development of specific cellular identities) as well as the production of extra cellular matrix (ECM, the tissues’ structural support system). As immune regulators, they also help to control blood vessel formation and so can act to prevent tumour development.

Long-term TGF-?1 elevation suggests the presence of an infection, undue suppression of the immune response, or disruption to the ECM production / breakdown cycle - which can then result in tumour formation. Lower than normal quantities signify decreased immune activity, especially that regulated by the extra cellular matrix.

DETAILED EXPLANATION

TGF-?1 is a multi-functional protein that is mainly produced by the platelets, the bones, the spleen, the immune and the Hematopoietic Cells and is an anti-inflammatory Cytokine. Its major effects include the production of extra cellular matrix, the regulation of cell growth and differentiation. Increased quantities are frequently associated with both the inhibition of angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels) and tumour suppressor activity. This assay is able to assist in the estimation of the level of TGF-?1 gene expression as part of the characterization of the processes influencing tumour development, regulation of the immunological activity and extra cellular matrix production.

Long-term high quantities may be linked to a parasitic infection, suppression of the immune response, tumour progression if there is an impaired circle of extra cellular matrix production / destruction. Low quantities indicate decreased activity of the immunological cells and an impaired circle of extra cellular matrix production / destruction, which regulate and control the activity of the other immunological cells with a destructive function.

APPLICATION

This assay will provide extremely valuable and accurate information relating to all pathological conditions.
