INTERLEUKIN 17 (IL-17)
GENE EXPRESSION

OVERVIEW EXPLANATION

The IL-17 Cytokine (signalling protein) is involved in inducing the body’s inflammatory response; as such, it is a common culprit in the development of several Auto-immune diseases, including Diabetes, allergies and arthritis. Elevated concentrations of IL-17 reflect the presence of such a condition. As such, assaying for this protein can shed light on current levels of Auto-immune activity and the concomitant need to suppress this excessive and disease-inducing aspect of the Immune System.

DETAILED EXPLANATION

IL-17 is a Cytokine produced by the T helper 17 immunological cells. These cells promote Inflammation and auto-immunity. IL-17 itself induces the production of interleukins 6 and 8, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and prostaglandin E2. The IL-17 gene could be captured by a herpes virus. In this case, viral IL-17 could interfere with the immune response directed against any virus-infected cells or protect infected cells against virus-induced death. This assay is able to obtain information relating to the state of the T 17 (Auto-immune) type of immunological activity and the necessity to implement appropriate immuno-suppression.

High quantities of IL-17 are associated with severe auto-immunity which is the hallmark of many pathological conditions, such as Diabetes, allergy, arthritis and etc. Low quantities of IL-17 indicate the absence of the profound auto-immunity.

APPLICATION

This assay will provide extremely valuable and accurate information relating to the following pathological conditions :-

- Diabetes and Auto-immune diseases.
