INTERLEUKIN 3 RECEPTOR
ALPHA (IL-3Rα)
GENE EXPRESSION

OVERVIEW EXPLANATION

IL-3rα is a glyco-protein (i.e. a protein that contains sugar) and it appears on the surface of cells which are derived from bone marrow and immunological cells (i.e. helpful cells) are developed. Through its interaction with IL-3 the growth of the cells can be stimulated to prevent their natural self destruction. The presence of IL-3rα on the surface of any transformed or cancerous cells (harmful cells) can make these cells more resistant to self destruction. Therefore high quantities are indicative of an accumulation of harmful cells. Low quantities of IL-3rα indicate that the production of the helpful immunological cells are being derived from the bone marrow in only low quantities.

DETAILED EXPLANATION

IL-3rα is a glycoprotein which belongs to the family of haematopoietic growth factor receptors and is expressed, generally, on the surface of the bone-marrow-derived cells of multiple lineages. Through interaction with its ligand, e.g. interleukin 3, signals are transducted to any early haematopoietic Progenitor Cells to stimulate their growth without self-destruction (Apoptosis). The appearance of IL-3r&aplha; on the surface of some transformed / Cancer Cells makes them resistant to destruction and permits such cells to survive and to increase their population. This assay is designed to evaluate the presence of one of the main factors which contribute to the resistance of a cell containing IL-3rα to self-destruct (Apoptosis).

High IL-3rα quantities are associated with an inhibition of the destruction of haematopoietic Progenitor Cells which can lead to their harmful over-accumulation. If there is a cancer, it makes some transformed cells resistant to destruction. Low quantities indicate an imminent risk of the presence of a low population of haematopoietic Progenitor Cells and associated with this there is a profound harmful deficiency of the immunological cells and other types of essential haematopoietic cells.
